The study showed that short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of pre-diabetes, known as impaired fasting incident-glycaemia (IFG).

IFG is a condition of the body is unable to properly regulate glucose levels in the body. People with IFG had a greater risk of type 2 diabetes and increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

The study was conducted by analyzing the medical data of participants who recorded 1455 Western New York Health Study for six years. These data show, all participants have the 35-79 year age range.

All the participants have passed through clinical trials that include blood pressure checks, height, and weight. They also answered a questionnaire about general health conditions, and sleep patterns. The research is published in the journal Annals of Epidemiology.
