SALT LAKE CITY — Police are investigating a man's motive for holding another man at knifepoint in an elevator of an office building Tuesday.
Police arrested Robert Hibbard, 41, for investigation of aggravated kidnapping Tuesday afternoon. The man Hibbard is accused of holding against his will was unharmed.
Salt Lake City Police Lt. Josh Scharman said Hibbard had been moving from floor to floor of the building at 257 E. 200 South. He was apprehended after he stepped off the elevator into the lobby of the FBI office in the building.
FBI agents detained Hibbard until police officers could take him into custody.
"As we responded, (Hibbard) had gone through several floors," Scharman said. "He ended up on one of the floors near the top. He was actually confronted by some federal agents who were in the building, and he was taken into custody."
Officers originally received a call about a man with a firearm in the building, but no gun was recovered. The call came just before 5 p.m., and many people were still in the building.
Scharman said police are pleased with the outcome.
