UTA investigating suspicious package at station

By ksl.com

September 17th, 2012 @ 3:14pm

SALT LAKE CITY — TRAX trains have stopped from 900 South to 2100 South due to a suspicious package found at the 1300 South station.

UTA officials said Monday afternoon that package had been found in the bike storage area of the station, but were unable to offer more details. UTA's twitter account simply said "Suspicious package. No further details." Earlier they called it a "Security related closure."

A bus bridge has been put into effect to get passengers around the closed area. UTA police appear to be on scene and investigating, though UTA spokesperson Gerry Carpenter said that no bomb squad had been called in.

More details will be posted as they become available.

Man found dead in canal was suspected in 17-year-old murder

Man found dead in canal was suspected in 17-year-old murder

By Pat Reavy

September 17th, 2012 @ 1:19pm

WEST VALLEY CITY — As West Valley police wait for autopsy results on the body of a man found in a canal last week, Salt Lake police will likely also be keeping an eye on the case.

On Friday, the body of Richard Anthony Byrd, 43, was pulled from a canal near 5800 South and 4100 West. Investigators estimated Byrd had been dead less than 24 hours when he was found. A cause of death had not been determined as of Monday.

Byrd was a person of interest in a cold case murder investigation being conducted by Salt Lake police.

In 2009, Salt Lake police served two search warrants on Byrd and another man, seeking DNA samples from each. Their investigation was in connection to the killing of Cornelia Salt, 22, of Phoenix, who was shot multiple times in the head. Her body was found in a rental car near 970 W. 900 South on Nov. 12, 1994.

Byrd was Salt's former boyfriend. According to court documents, a confidential informant told police that Byrd was upset with her for leaving him to marry another man, "so he shot her three times in the head. (The confidential informant) knew details of the crime scene that were not public."

Byrd spent most of the last 20 years in and out of prison and jail. In 2010, he was sentenced to six months in jail for felony theft, and he also had two alcohol-related misdemeanor convictions in June and July of this year. Before that, he pleaded guilty to attempted theft of a vehicle in 1990, robbery in 1992, and attempted assault by a prisoner in March 2000, according to Utah court records.

Have You Seen This? Hunters become hunted

Have You Seen This? Hunters become hunted

By Graydon Johns

September 17th, 2012 @ 1:34pm

SALT LAKE CITY — It is either a dream come true... or a real life nightmare.

Either way, what a pretty cool experience to get up close and personal with a mountain lion.

Avid ksl.com user and Have You Seen This? fan Jonathan Baker and some buddies were out elk hunting last week when the hunters suddenly became the hunted.

"We were basically ringing the dinner bell for this cougar," writes Baker. "We saw him stick his head up, watch us for about 20 minutes, then come stalking down before realizing we were not, in fact, baby elk."

Or... he knew you weren't "baby elk," but didn't know how many of you there were or how heavily armed you were until he got close enough.

I guess I'm just giving this impressive animal the benefit of the doubt in the slim chance we meet some day.

I want to be on his good side.

(Thanks to Jonathan Baker for the suggestion)

Wild finish gets wacky when Ute fan confronts BYU's Mendenhall

Wild finish gets wacky when Ute fan confronts BYU's Mendenhall

By Graydon Johns

September 17th, 2012 @ 12:44pm

SALT LAKE CITY — What a wild and wacky finish to the BYU/Utah rivalry game on Saturday.

The game was a complete mess, but was filled with so much drama and emotion.

The game looked over three different times, but wasn't officially a Utah win until Riley Stephenson's kick hit the upright and Ute fans could justifiably storm the field (for a third time).

Unfortunate fan behavior

One of those fans unfortunately thought it was appropriate to confront and heckle Bronco Mendenhall as the BYU head coach headed off the field flanked by two police officers.

But, instead of ignoring the fan Bronco turned and headed right for him. The heckler promptly put his tail between his legs and bolted - white suspenders and all.

Not sure what he was thinking, but remember Ute fans, it was your behavior who gave BYU an extra crack at a game-winning field goal.

Can you imagine if that kick went through the uprights?

Look at the bright side

But while Utah fans can cherish the victory for another year, BYU fans are looking for the silver lining.

And leave it up to BYUtv to find the bright side with the Cougars' Top 5 plays from Saturday's contest.

BYU receiver Cody Hoffman was a highlight reel all by himself, finishing with eight catches for 120 yards, a touchdown and two plays in the Top 5, including the catch on 4th and 12.

Keep your chins up Cougar fans. Boise State is up next.

Absurd game-winner

Speaking of Boise State... the end of the Western Kentucky/Kentucky game reminded many of the Broncos' win over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Who knew absurd drama would come out of the Western Kentucky/Kentucky game on Saturday. Except for those living in Kentucky, I'm pretty sure nobody else was paying attention.

And too bad.

Down a point in overtime after scoring a touchdown, Western Kentucky decides to go for two points. And that's when the fun begins.

Quarterback Kawuan James passes to receiver Antonio Andrews who then returns the favor and passes it back to Jakes who trots in untouched for the game-winning two-point conversion.

Awesome.

Proper Etiquette?

Etiquette in the NFL? Seems silly in a game where dudes are smashing into each other, but lesson learned from the Giants/Buccaneers game Sunday.

Up 41-34 with the ball and and with just seconds to go Eli Manning and his Giants go into the "victory formation" to run out the clock.

But the Bucs would have none of it. On the snap of the ball, the Tampa Bay players busted through the line to try and force a fumble.

Instead, it knocked over Manning and infuriated Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, who cursed at Bucs rookie coach Greg Schiano during the post-game handshake and and called it "unprofessional" in the post-game press conference.

Manning said it was "a cheap shot."

Schiano, the former Rutgers coach, said his team was just playing to the final whistle and it was not dirty.

You be the judge.

Jimmer saves a life

Okay, not really, but he answered a desperate Tweet from a passionate fan.

@Drizzy3535 tweeted "Im gonna get a retweet from @jimmerfredette even if it kills me! Dude like my role model ladies & gentleman!"

So, being the true gentleman he is, Jimmer Fredette promptly replied, ""Don't Die!"

The NBA player is also a comedian.

Fredette will be in town Tuesday signing copies of his new book.

Fredette will be at the Downtown Salt Lake City Deseret Book store from 7-9 p.m. He'll also be at the BYU Bookstore from 3-5 p.m. and University Mall from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Kings guard will also be a guest on Cougar Sports Saturday this upcoming weekend on KSL NewsRadio.

Professional burglars hit department store in Cottonwood Heights, authorities say

Professional burglars hit department store in Cottonwood Heights, authorities say

By Pat Reavy

September 17th, 2012 @ 11:03am

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Investigators believe a burglary at a strip mall store over the weekend was carried out by professionals.

Sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, police say someone entered T.J. Maxx, 6995 S. 1300 East, by going through the roof, then disabled the alarm, cut through a wall to reach a safe, somehow managed to open the safe and took an undisclosed amount of money.

"They seemed to have a pretty good knowledge of what they were doing," said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Gary Young.

No alarms were tripped and the burglar, or burglars, were not captured by surveillance video. The burglars also seemed to know exactly where they were going, Young said.

Detectives say it's likely more than one person participated in the well-executed crime. Young said the group gained access to a common area shared by several business of the strip mall by finding an opening on the roof or cutting through it. They then used a power tool, possibly a hand-held cordless saw, to cut through a wall right to where the safe was located inside TJ Maxx, he said.

Young said Monday he was unsure if the burglars drilled through the safe or used another tool, such as a hammer, to open it.

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call police at 801-944-7100.

Skin cancer and kids: Clothing as important as sunscreen, expert says

Skin cancer and kids: Clothing as important as sunscreen, expert says

By Mary Richards

September 17th, 2012 @ 10:06am

SALT LAKE CITY — Doctors across the nation are seeing more cases of skin cancer in children.

At the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, researchers are trying to discover what genetic components could be associated with childhood skin cancer, which is still a rare occurrence.

Dr. Sansy Leachman says until that genetic reasoning is found, parents must be the main advocates for their children's skin and should check it often for any changes.

"Just that awareness is the most powerful thing a parent can give their child," Dr. Leachman said. "Just that modeling, just doing that is one of the best things you can do for a child, so they realize that this is an important thing and they should be paying attention to that."

Nationally, some doctors say 10 years ago, they never saw skin cancer in a child. Now, they sees a few cases a year. Dr. Leachman says it's hard to pinpoint numbers on ages when it comes to skin cancer.

She says contributing factors may be that more, younger women are tanning at salons now than in years past. And children are not as covered up as they used to be. She recommends long sleeves, pants and hats in the sun, as well as sunscreen.

More Information

For more information about kids and skin cancer, or about any cancer, contact Huntsman Cancer Institute's Learning Center at:
  • 1-888-424-2100
  • patient.education@hci.utah.edu
  • text to "askhci"

"Clothing may be a better option than sunscreen," she said. "Anyplace you can cover with clothing, you don't have to reapply and it doesn't wash off. It's easier to keep it on. Sunscreen is a great adjunct. It's something you put on in the places you can't keep covered, but it doesn't keep you fully covered the way that clothing does."

Dr. Leachman says dermatologists are now recommending more clothing, hats and sunglasses for kids.

She said Utah is routinely at the top of the list of states with skin cancer incidence rates.

She encourages parents to be aware that high altitude, high number of sunny days, and a large fair-skinned population all mean more risks for getting skin cancer in Utah.

Car swerves, lands upside down in creek

By Shara Park

September 17th, 2012 @ 8:13am

MURRAY — A motorist who swerved to avoid hitting a dog in the road ended up in Little Cottonwood Creek.

It happened just before 6 a.m. at 4800 South and 500 West.

Murray police say the vehicle was traveling north on 500 West when the woman driving swerved to miss a dog. Her car went off the road, over a curb, through a fence and launched into the water, landing upside down.

The 25-year-old driver was still in the vehicle when police arrived.

"Officers were able to get in the water and open the door and assist her in getting out," said Sgt. Brian Wright of the Murray Police Department.

He said the woman was cold but had only minor injuries.

Animation company looking for story ideas

Animation company looking for story ideas

By Paul Nelson

September 17th, 2012 @ 7:17am

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah animation company is hoping to hit it big in the movie business. But, it needs a little help, and you might be the person to give it.

Too Many Legs Animation is known for making corporate animations and commercials. It has worked with companies like Fusion I/O, Neways International, and it's won a Silver Addy Award for its animation for the Orange County Transit Authority.

While the company will continue to make these kinds of commercial animations, it's been given a chance to step into a bigger arena. Co-Founder Jonathan Hallett says they've reached a deal with eCinema Networks to make five feature length films.

"In Hollywood terms, they're very, very small budgets. They're $1 million to $2 million budgets," he said.

But, these projects are very big to TML. Hallett says they'll need to hire dozens of new people to animate, produce and complete these movies.

However, the company is looking for story ideas, and that's where you come in. It's accepting ideas from the public.

"If that person's story is selected then they'll get paid for it and they'll be in the credits, of course, as well," Hallett said. "They might not be the one that writes the entire story. We may just take their idea and flush it out into a full story."

Just in case you're thinking, "Hey, I've got a great idea for a slasher/horror movie that would be great," Co-Founder Ian Johnston says that's really not what they're looking for. Think more family friendly for a younger audience.

To Submit Ideas

People can email their ideas to story@tmlanimation.com. The story pitches shouldn't be long, just a few sentences that really get to the heart of the idea.

"We are looking for content that is ethically wholesome," Johnston said. "It has a good boundary and good morals. [It should be] emotionally charged so that by the time you're done experiencing it, you feel like you've either learned something, gained something or have a different perspective on something."

Plus, Johnston says they're looking for completely original ideas not necessarily based on the current trends.

"If we can develop those ideas in advance, then there's a chance that when that trend comes along the movie will be done and ready to get out there," he said.

Cedar Hills residents get giardia parasite from dirty water supply

Cedar Hills residents get giardia parasite from dirty water supply

By Devon Dolan

September 16th, 2012 @ 10:58pm

CEDAR HILLS — Think about how many times you used water today to brush your teeth, shower, cook or wash your hands. You count on water from your tap to keep you clean and healthy, but what if it was doing just the opposite?

"Other neighbors had been sick for a couple of weeks, but we all just kept it to ourselves thinking it was a bug or the flu or something," said Cedar Hills resident Mary Moore.

Since early July, neighbors in a Cedar Hills neighborhood were getting sick. In September, symptoms got worse. Several people have been diagnosed with giardia since then, but what was causing it and why was it was spreading was not yet clear.

The only common factor among the 13 affected houses was dirty yellow water.

"So I got thinking, Maybe they screwed up when they switched us over to Cedar Hills (water supply),'" said Aaron Michaels, a resident who contracted the disease.

That's exactly what happened. The area was getting their water from Manila Water Company untilntil they went bankrupt earlier in the summer. On July 5, a private contractor moved their line to an existing Cedar Hills system. That's also when neighbors started getting sick. The residents notified the city on Sept. 4 and public works began digging.

What is giardia?

Giardia is a parasite that can be found in water, uncooked food, excrement and soil.Symptoms include loss of appetite, fever, diarrhea, blood in urine, loose or watery stool, stomach cramps, upset stomach, bloating, flatulence, and sulpherous burping. There are several medications to treat the parasite, but often treatment is not necessary as the immune system is capable of removing the parasite. It can resolve within six weeks.

"We did find a cross-connect in (a) cluster of valves where there was a two inch lateral tied from the culinary irrigation to the pressurized irrigation," said City manager David Bunker.

Simply put, a small, unknown pipe was allowing in secondary water. But the city didn't know about it. It was never identified on the construction plan.

That pipe has since been patched up. The city has also flushed the system with chlorine and fresh water. They're will be testing the water through Sept. 21 to make sure the giardia is contained once and for all. Bunker said water wasn't tested earlier because it was already an active line there are no testing requirements.

But what about neighbors' pain and suffering?

"We've all been charged with the water," said one neighbor,"and they said Well, we will work with you on your bill.' That's not what we want to hear. What we want to hear is that you don't have to pay for the terrible water that you've been drinking."

Mayro Gary Gygi said they will compensate for water bills during the past few months. Also said that all visits to the doctor, medication and time away from work should be filed with the city's insurance company.

"Anytime anyone gets sick we take that very seriously," Gygi said.

A notice which asked residents to boil their water in order to kill of the germ should be liften within a week. But some neighbors say they're still hesitant.

The community will have another meeting with the city on Thursday.
